Tom Dunne and his brother Mike manage a spring calving herd of 300 Norwegian Red x cows

Milk is supplied to Dairygold Coop and their herd size has increased from 200 cows. The plan is to increase to 350 cows after 2015 as they have sufficient land to carry that number of cows. Tom and Mike established a farm partnership with their parents Michael and Nora when they were both single. Michael senior is still hale and hearty at 80 years of age but their mother Nora sadly passed away in late 2009.

Great Taste, the largest blind-tasted food awards scheme, has reached an exciting stage for many producers in Ireland and results just released show that some of the 3-star winners of 2014 are; a humble but deliciously full-flavoured Beef Dripping made from the suet of Angus and Hereford beef by James Whelan Butchers of Clonmel in Co. Tipperary. Minister Tom Hayes T.D., was at the Baileys Irish Cream factory in Dublin recently to launch this year’s Diageo Baileys Champion Dairy Cow Competition which is sponsored by the drinks company Diageo in association with its cream supplier Glanbia Ingredients Ireland Ltd. The final takes places at the Virginia Show Co. Cavan on 20th August when breeders from all over Ireland will compete for the Diageo Baileys Irish Champion title which is accompanied by a cheque for 2,500 Euros. Last year, Northern Ireland breeder, Neal Pepper from Dromore in County Down won first place and the Reserve Champion went to Limerick breeder, Derek Frawley.

They have been increasing their high yielding spring calving pedigree herd of Holstein Friesian cows over the years. They reached 100 cows in 2004 and had 200 by 2008.
