Grape farmers begin harvest

Despite attempts by the Ministry of Agriculture to stop 10 Aussenkehr farmers selling their grapes to a preferred buyer other than the one touted by the Ministry, the farmers yesterday confirmed they will start harvesting today. Moreover, the Orange River Irrigation Project farmers (ORIP) said their relationship with Coolfresh Namibia at the moment is fine, despite the fact that the farmers refuse to deal exclusively with the Dutch-controlled company in the sale and marketing of their table grapes. The farmers said this week that they prefer dealing with local buyers, who they claim offer a higher price for their produce. For the moment, the farmers and their preferred buyers at Olympia Fruit Suppliers, the company currently in talks with the farmers to buy their produce this season, have made a deal with Coolfresh for cooling facilities and packaging materials, according to Coolfresh.
