Problems over dairy prices

According to Newsday, the latest data released by the Central Statistical Office indicate that inflation continued on a downward trend for the second consecutive month in 2011. Headline inflation, measured by the 12-month increase in the Index of Retail Prices, declined to 10.7 per cent in February 2011 from 12.5 per cent in January. On a monthly basis, headline inflation fell by 0.7 per cent in February following an increase of 1.1 per cent in the previous month.

Farming problems

Since publication of my last article I have discovered an article by Minister Mary King which sets out proposals for diversification of the economy in the on-line edition of the Trinidad and Tobago Coalition of Service Industries Quarterly, Issue 8 (January-March, 2011). The article is entitled: "The diamond that hopes to be forever." I am in entire agreement with the following statement which heads the article: "Diversification of the economy of Trinidad and Tobago is imperative in the global climate of uncertainty" and the reference to "our economic dependence upon a medium term unsustainable source of revenue — petroleum."
