No barley shortage
Drinkers needn’t worry about the bad harvest — there’s a surplus of two million tonnes of malting barley in the EU.
However, it may pay malting growers better to sell the grain for livestock feeding.
The strong EU malting supplies, boosted by a jump in spring sowings after frost wrote-off many winter crops, may prove temporary.
Growers can sell their malting barley as feed, rather than risk it not meeting maltsters’ high quality specifications — they would lose only about €10 a tonne.
