The harvest could have been worse
With the harvest now in its final phase it seems unlikely that the output will exceed two million tonnes and might possibly be as low as 1.8 million tonnes.
Yields of all crops were back considerably on last year's record levels. Winter wheat and oat output were worst affected.
The reduced output happens despite a 6.34% increase in total area, which was mainly a shift to barley. And barley yields suffered least, on average, in comparison to wheat and oat crops.
Yields suffered most in the south/southeast corner and quality also took a hammering. The generally disappointing yields resulted in many growers not being able to meet their level of forward sales.
The implications of this, and the poor grain quality, are currently being discussed in the trade.
