Sheep farmers from North Devon were among traders from all over the country for the biggest sale of breeding ewes in the South West, held at Exeter Livestock Centre.

The auctioneers, Kivells and Husseys, accepted 5,621 sheep for the event.
They included 100 Suffolk cross 2-tooth ewes from Jimmy Tucker's flock at Lee Farm, High Bickington, which topped at £141 with a market average of £134.20.

Not far behind was Stuart Rogers of Acland Barton, Barnstaple, seeing his best at £136 and the Elworthys of Satterleigh, Umberleigh, hitting £138 for the best of their Dorset x Mule ewes, selling to an average of £131.36.

Among some of the highest was Mark Kimber, of Merton, who saw the best of his Poll Dorset 2 tooths to £158 and sold to an average of £149.33.

Sheep auctioneer Russell Steer said buyers came from Scotland, Wales, Eastern Counties and all parts of the South West.

He said: "Trade remained strong from start to finish with several vendors going home with a better than expected trade for their sheep."
