Potato farming
Reuben Collins has joined a new line-up of expert regional potato growers, in time to promote the current Potato Week.
The Cornish farmer is leading the charge for growers in the Westcountry and joins nine other experts from across Britain.
.Together they will work closely with the website www.manyfacesofpotatoes.co. uk to promote the crop and show the nation how tasty potatoes are.
Chosen for his knowledge and experience, Mr Collins is currently busy promoting Potato Week, which lasts through to next Sunday.
He is the fourth generation potato grower on his family farm at Tregonan, on The Roseland.
He grows 130 acres of potatoes and is so committed to producing the best-quality crop he is out in his fields by 6am on most days, checking the progress of the plants, monitoring soil conditions and the weather, and ensuring the potatoes have just the right balance of water and nutrients.
When not playing directly with spuds, he is a keen supporter of his local community – and each year spends a lot of time at food and farming events across the South West, promoting his produce and encouraging locals to become more interested about the provenance of their food.
Mr Collins said: "Living on a farm, I'm lucky enough to have potatoes on the dinner table every day and am really keen to show people just how easy it is to make potatoes part of any meal.
Not only are they one of the world's most versatile foods, they're perfect base for any healthy and delicious meal, and are extremely quick and easy to cook, too.
"I'm delighted to be representing the potato industry, and can't wait to get stuck in. At the moment it's full steam ahead during Potato Week."
Maria Ball, from Potato Council, said: "We're really excited to have Reuben working with us. It's great that he comes from such a strong farming heritage.
All of our growers are passionate about potatoes and have unique and inspiring stories to tell."
