Bazadais win beef carcass competition

WALKERSTON and Mackay customers are again benefiting from the latest 2012 Callide Dawson Carcass Competition, where the Bazadais breed has once again taken out the major awards at this year's competition.

Eddie and Donna Wales, and Don and Jan Large, formerly from Ida Creek, Bowen, and relocated to The Cedars, Biloela, have added to last year's win with their Bazadais/Brahman-cross cattle.

Last year The Cedars wins included the champion grainfed steer, reserve grainfed steer, second for single grainfed steer, and second for a pen of grainfed heifers.

This year, Wales Grazing won champion grainfed heifer, first for pen of grainfed heifers, and most even carcase weight for a pen steers.

Don Large bought his first Bazadais bulls from the McFarlanes at Greenmount Bazadais Stud, Walkerston, in 2006, and since then have added more Bazadais full-blood bulls and full-blood breeders.

To go one better, Keith and Bev Lacey, Grenada, Capella, using Bazadais over Brahman and Droughtmaster, again won the major share of the awards on offer at the Callide Dawson Competition in 2011 and 2012.

In 2011 these included most successful exhibitor 2011, grand champion carcase (out of 416 entries), champion grainfed heifer, first for grainfed heifer, second for grainfed heifer, and third for pen of grainfed steers.

This year the Laceys again won the most successful exhibitor, grand champion steer carcase, champion grainfed heifer, first for pen of grainfed steers, second for pen of grainfed heifers, first for grainfed heifer, third for grainfed heifer, and first for single grainfed steer.

The Laceys also purchased their first full-blood Bazadais bulls from Greenmount Bazadais in 2006, and have now added full-blood Bazadais breeders to develop their own stud operation.

Mr McFarlane congratulated the producers on their wins, which is great news for the customers of Walkerston Country Meats and Slade Point Meats that are supplied by Wales Grazing and Grenada.

"We get approximately 300 head from these producers a year and it confirms the quality of the meat sold by these butchers," he said.

"The Callide Dawson is a standout carcase competition because all the cattle go on feed at the same feedlot on the same day and receive the same feed throughout the competition."
