Environmental Batman Joins H&H Land and Property
H&H Land and Property now have their very own Batman. Jonathan Pounder has just been appointed as an Environmental Advisor for the company. He brings with him a wealth of ecological skills and experience and holds a Natural England Bat Licence.
Jonathan Pounder, Environmental Specialist for H&H Land and Property
Jonathan joins H&H Land and Property from East Durham College where he was a lecturer and course leader on Environmental Conservation. In his new role, he will become an integral member of H&H Land and Property’s team of Environmental Specialists who deal
with a wide range of environmental work across the North of England.
Conservation and environmental management are playing an increasingly important part in farming business. Land owners, farmers or community organisations looking at any development opportunities must ensure that they comply with current legal requirements, including “protected species” surveys, such as bats, newts, water voles, badgers and a variety of birds. As a result of Jonathan’s appointment, H&H Land and Property will now be able to complete such surveys on behalf of their clients.
H&H Land and Property’s professional environmental team, spread between their Carlisle and Durham offices, includes Common Land & Upland specialists, Farm Environment Plan surveyors and advisors on Entry Level & Higher Level Stewardship and Single Payment schemes. The team also provides integral support to other areas of the company, such as renewable energy, planning and farm & estate management. Leading the team is long standing company advisor David Morley, who comments,
“Where some ecological work previously had to be outsourced, we now have an in-house team to get the job done. Acting as a ‘one-stop shop’ for environmental issues means we can provide a more efficient and better value service to our clients.”
Jonathan tells us what his new role will involve:
“In recent years land management has changed and environmental issues at all levels are becoming more and more important. We now spend a lot of time looking at how the implementation of renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, solar farms and biomass boilers can affect the environment that surrounds them.”
“There are also a considerable number of ecological surveys to complete, advising farmers on development and ensuring that protected species are considered in any work. Small changes can have a large impact on the environment around them; this is where getting plans reviewed is a critical step in planning a project. It is about helping land owners comply with the current legislative requirements and finding the best solution”.
The main aim of Jonathan’s position is to strike a balance between the environment and human activities, no mean feat for a man involved in environmental and conservation projects across the country. In his spare time, Jonathan works as a volunteer with the Durham Bat Group as a Bat Group Patch Worker carrying out roost visits and dealing with bat surveys. He is a committee member of the Northumbria Mammal Group and the Natural History Societies of Northumbria and Hartlepool. Along with bats, Jonathan has completed extensive work on newts, water voles and badgers. Part of Jonathan’s role with the environmental team is to engage farmers, land owners, community and interest groups into thinking and planning for the wider environment.
“This is a great job that mixes work with my hobbies. Day-to-day I am offering advice, listening to proposals and making suggestions and advising from the inception stage of projects, right through to completing protected species surveys”.
Managing Director of H&H Land and Property John Robson commented on the appointment,
“As far as we know, we are the only team of land agents in the North of England to have our own resident batman. Jonathan will play a vital role within the new environmental team; his knowledge is extensive and he also has vast experience in the field of conservation”.
