Coles lift milk prices

Dairy farmers hope an increase in the farm gate price for milk in Wetern Australia will be replicated in the eastern states.

Yesterday, Coles announced it would increase the price it pays to WA dairy processor Harvey Fresh for its branded and private label milk.

It's been nearly one-and-a half years since the retailer dropped its milk to $1 a litre, putting pressure on local producers.

Chair of the NSW Farmers Association Dairy Committee, Terry Toohey, claims Coles has finally admitted that its milk pricing is unsustainable.

"It just shows that Coles, in their 'down down' campaign, is having an impact on supply in the domestic market in Australia, and I believe that this is only a start," he said.

"They'll still need to increase it considerably if they're going to retain fresh milk in those liquid states."
