Rise in lamb sales

Shoppers in Wales buying more lamb

New developments happen daily within the Welsh red meat industry, whether it is to do with our home or export markets, developments within the industry itself or on policy.

Below you will find our latest press releases relating to some of our work.amorris@hccmpw.org.uk

Shoppers in Wales bought £14.6 million worth of lamb in a three month period according to new statistics.

Figures released by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) show that both the volume and expenditure of lamb sales rose during the twelve week period leading up to the 10th June 2012 compared with the same period the year before.

1,869 tonnes of lamb were sold in stores in Wales, a nearly 20 percent increase from 2011.

The increase was helped by a 62 percent rise in sales of lamb leg joints for roasting.

The rise in household purchases of lamb meant shoppers in Wales spent just over £14.6 million on lamb, up almost 15 percent on the previous year.

Emma Jones, HCC’s Market Development Executive, said “It’s very pleasing to see an increase in lamb sales and we hope that this will continue as the Welsh Lamb season gathers pace.”

The figures are released as a new £850,000 marketing campaign for Welsh Lamb is launched.

The campaign includes television, online, billboard and magazine advertising as well as an on-pack competition to win a luxury cottage holiday in Wales and a meal prepared by Britain’s youngest head chef.
