A BETTER than usual season and success at recent shows has led to an outstanding sale result for Ashley Park stud, Bengworden, Victoria, last Wednesday.
The stud offered 150 stud and flock rams for sale, including Poll Dorset, White Suffolk and Suffolks.
Stud Poll Dorset rams were first on the auction list, which included lot 4, the 2012 Royal Melbourne Show champion Poll Dorset ram.
This ram achieved good results at both the Ballarat Sheep Show and Australian Sheep and Wool Show.
All rams were weighed on August 15, and this prize winner weighed 130 kilograms that day.
Gillian Ryan, representing Gillmore Poll Dorset stud, Yeoval, NSW, appreciated this ram's specifications, paying the equal sale top price of $5000.
Lot 4 was scanned with a fat depth of 9.2 millimetres, eye muscle depth (EMD) of 44.4mm and eye muscle area (EMA) of 36.7 square centimetres.
There was a lot of local competition throughout the sale, and the larger percentage of rams stayed within East Gippsland.
However, the two top price rams went interstate with lucky lot 13 - a White Suffolk ram - purchased by A.J. Hurst, Seriston stud, Lucindale, at $5000.
On the day the ram weighed 147.5kg.
Its measurements were 7.2mm fat, EMD 44.8mm and EMA 37.2cm2.
Other statistics from a successful day were, Poll Dorset flock rams selling to $1300, averaging $829; White Suffolk flock rams to $1100, averaging $737, and Suffolk flock rams to $1350, averaging $900.
