Drug lobby to powerful for these boys
Representative Henry Wasman (D-Calif.) this week announced he will introduce a bill titled the “Delivering Antibiotic Transparency in Animals (DATA) Act.”
The bill would require drug manufacturers and feed mills to provide the FDA with detailed reports on types, purposes, and quantities of antibiotics being given to animals through feed.
“We need reliable information about the use of antibiotics in agricultural operations,” Waxman says.
“The more we learn, the graver the threat becomes from overuse of antibiotics by industrial-scale farms.
We need this information so scientists and Congress can stop the spread of drug-resistant infections from farm animals to humans.”
Waxman serves as Ranking Member on the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
According to a news release from Waxman’s office, “virtually all antibiotic consumption on farms comes through feeds mixed with antibiotics.”
