Farmers and retailers
The much publicised commitment of retailers to Irish farming must be backed up by prompt payment to suppliers, the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee was told on Tuesday.
In a generally positive and upbeat presentation from representatives of Food and Drink Ireland, the need for timely payment by retailers was highlighted as "vital for small businesses in this credit-starved economic climate," according to committee chairman Andrew Doyle.
"We were told that the €14bn domestic grocery sector was in difficulty, due to power wielded by the large supermarket chains in the sector".
Concern was also expressed that EU climate change targets might hinder the chances of Food Harvest 2020 goals being achieved.
