According to Fijilive, this is following a meeting between the Ministry of Health, and egg industry stakeholders including the Fiji Correctional Services that also produce eggs for commercial use.
Health Ministry spokesman Peni Namotu said eggs should be kept at an ambient temperature to ensure that they remain healthy and edible in line with the Food Safety Act 2003 and Food Safety Regulation 2009.
“This is part of food safety measures by the ministry since improper storage of eggs poses health risk to the people,” said Mr Namotu.
He said the industry has been monitoring salmonella growth on egg shells and none has been found so far.
Transportation of eggs is another issue that the ministry raised.
Mr Namotu said long term ideal transportation over long distance should be in cooler trucks as is practied for pasteurised eggs.
