Diesel subsidy for farmers
Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar’s announcement that diesel subsidy would be paid directly to drought-hit farmers has left Punjab and Haryana in a fix.
Both states are now looking for relief in the package’s formula as despite it being for drought relief, a similar central government subsidy in 2009 had seen Punjab slicing away Rs 500 crore of the Rs 800 crore grant for its power board while Haryana had given its entire relief of Rs 400 crore to its power utilities.
Both states had adopted a common plea that electricity was bought at high costs to run tubewells in paddy fields
