The chart above shows how slow British shout prices have been in responding to higher continental prices.
It also shows shout prices will have to go higher yet.. or abattoirs will step up their current exports of fresh pork cuts to Germany.
There is now some evidence (see 'European pig herd falling like a stone', below) to suggest the recent lift in continental prices may not be a short-term phenomenon.
Some continental producers say they are breaking even at current prices. But this is only because they are feeding home-grown grain.
They know they will need a better price, once the pile on the shed floor has been used up.
