Pig farmers need more bargaining power
"I am delighted to lend my support to the National Pig Association's Save Our Bacon campaign," says Scottish MEP Alyn Smith.
"We need to examine the case for extending the recent dairy package, which allows farmers to come together in producer organisations, to bargain more successfully using their market power for a fair price, in all farm sectors.
"We need a fair CAP reform which provides a level playing field in direct payments to all farmers no matter what they produce. We need to look at a Grocery Ombudsman with teeth, which can apply dissuasive sanctions to retailers who abuse their power.
"And we need proper implementation across the European Union of animal welfare legislation, to ensure a level playing field for all farmers, so that those who have invested in higher standards are not punished as a result of poor enforcement"
