US beef forced on South Korea
A free trade agreement (FTA) between the US and South Korea was passed recently, but not
before violent protests from opposition members of the South Korean National Assembly.
South Korean farmers said the deal threatened their livelihoods. Under the FTA, tariffs on US beef imported by Korea will drop from 40% to zero over 15 years, and duties on US pork will be phased out over two years from 2014, according to Absa’s Agritrends November 2011 newsletter. – Robyn Joubert
