A north Queensland poultry farmer says mechanical digestion could be the quickest and most efficient way to turn chook poo into fertiliser.
Geoff Ironside, from Townsville, says he's using Australia's first thermophilic digestor to process the manure from his 200,000 laying hens.
He claims the machine uses enzymes and heat to turn manure and other organic matter into sanitized and pathogen-free fertiliser, which could be used in the sugar, banana, and orchard industries, as well as on broadacre farms.
But Mr Ironside says he doesn't expect to recoup the $500,000 cost of importing the machine with an immediate sales boom.
"Given that it's new technology and there's a bit of reluctance for producers not to pay as much for organic fertiliser than they do for chemical, I'd say probably closer to five years."
