Clean water for pigs

The feed additve Bactocell PA 10, manufactured and marketed by Lallemand Animal Nutrition, has been approved for use in the European Union in drinking water for weaned piglets and pigs for fattening.
The feed additive has been classified as a zootechnical additive.

This scientific opinion was released by the Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (Feedap), a part of the European Feed Safety Authority (EFSA).

The panel received the request for a scientific opinion from the European Commission.

Bactocell is the name for a feed additive based on the cells of a strain Pediococcus acidilactici.
The panel was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on whether the feed additive could be administered via drinking water.

The additive is intended for use in water for drinking at the dose of 5.0 x 108 CFU/ litre water.
This dose is half of that authorised in complete feed for the same target animals and would provide essentially the same exposure given that water consumption is approximately two- to threefold greater than feed consumption.

Consequently, the conclusions on safety and efficacy of the additive when used in feeding stuffs also apply to its use in water for drinking.

The feed additive is already authorised for use in complete diets.
