FUW Deputy Director transports Olympic flame
The journey of the 2012 Olympic Flame by rail from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog was overseen by Farmers’ Union of Wales deputy director of operations and Ffestiniog Railway volunteer driver Roger Van Praet on Monday.
Mr Van Praet transported the “mother” flame from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog on the David Lloyd George engine, named after the renowned local politician and former Prime Minister.
Passengers on the train included Olympic torch bearer Elin Owen of Llanrug, pupils of Ysgol Cefn Coch, Penrhyndeudraeth and local AM and Plaid Cymru agriculture and rural affairs spokesman Dafydd Ellis Thomas.
“It was a privilege to play a small part in this once in a lifetime event and bringing the torch through the area recognised the significance of Blaenau Ffestiniog and Porthmadog in the industrial heritage of Wales,” said Mr Van Praet.
